Don't Design Like a Programmer
We developers have a hard time with user experience design. We get that it’s important now, but we don’t really know how to do it (even if we can write the UI code), and there’s never enough time anyway. Worse, UX design is very subjective and personal, so you might not like what I like and vice versa. It’s so much easier to focus on delivering the features, enabling the key tasks, and depending on user feedback to get the details right. Unfortunately, that approach often fails to deliver the great user experiences our customers expect today.

This workshop starts by quickly exploring the UI design approach typically used by developers and why such designs fail with users. We then quickly review an efficient, practical 6 step design process that you can use to make good design decisions quickly.

The heart of the workshop: You will work with a small team to apply the process by designing a simple mobile app, hands on, step by step. Towards the end, you will get to measure your success by doing an informal usability study and comparing your work with an app created by expert designers.

JavaScript: ES6 & Beyond
The JavaScript language is rapidly evolving. The ES6 specification ushered in arrow functions, templates strings, destructuring, iterators, and other great additions to the language. The next version of JavaScript, ES7, will bring even more features. This workshop will begin exploring some of the exciting additions to the language as well as best practices with the features available today all while building a few fun applications. We won’t be using any frameworks or third-party libraries. Just good-old-fashion vanilla JavaScript.

Workshop Prerequisites:
- We’ll be writing a lot of JavaScript code so make sure you have your favorite code editor installed. If you need one, download Microsoft’s Visual Studio Code (http://code.visualstudio.com/).
- You’ll also need a modern web browser installed like Microsoft Edge, Chrome, or Firefox.
- Course files will be provided when you arrive at the workshop.

Real-World Risk Management Techniques
As with any other aspect of operating a business, managing cyber risk well is predicated on making informed decisions, and then executing reliably within the context of those decisions. Unfortunately today, too many security teams still don’t understand how to effectively translate technical security issues into risk language the business can use.

During this interactive session we’ll debunk the myths about what risk is and what it isn’t. We'll practice techniques for measuring, documenting, and analyzing risks to help the business prioritize IT and security activities. Attendees will walk away with new tools and methodologies that will help them align security and risk with business goals, and help elevate security as a strategic and trusted partner.

Enabling Innovation through Integrating Agile and Software Development Best Practices
There has been a lot of focus on agile practices as a means for increasing productivity of development teams. As companies consider software innovation initiatives, it will be critical that these methods are adopted within those efforts. However, agile methodologies by themselves will not create the efficiency and productivity that companies should expect from their innovation teams. At Don't Panic Labs, we have spent years working on new product development and have achieved success through recognizing that agile processes are just a part of a larger product development culture that also includes the integration of software design and development best practices. In the talk I will discuss how we have integrated these best practices and discuss lessons learned and benefits.

IoT + DDoS = Disruptive (Business + Cyber) Risk!
Gartner estimates there are about 6.4 billion Internet of Things (IoT) devices today, such as DVRs, surveillance cameras, and many others, all connected to the Web and all with Internet (IP) addresses. By 2020, it is expected that the number of Web-connected devices will increase to 20.8 billion.

So why are these numbers relevant to cyber-security? An IoT fact is that these devices were not designed or developed with security at their core. Further, these devices are typically not configured securely.

As IoT becomes pervasive across industries, including healthcare, financial, and government, organizations must be prepared for this rising and disruptive threat. Further, the risk from IoT increases the challenge for addressing compliance mandates associated with sensitive and confidential information.

From this brief, you will learn:
• Examine why IoT = Internet of Threats.
• Step through how botnets and DDoS can be disruptive to sites and Web applications.
• Walk through an IoT Security Policy that addresses key compliance requirements.
• Develop a strategy for addressing such emerging threats in the context of your enterprise cyber security plan.

Machine Learning & Data Science
What is a machine learning data scientist? Many companies struggle with the concept of what machine learning is and what it does. Machine Learning is quickly becoming a barrier to entry for a product. Companies will soon not consider a piece of software or app that does not have machine learning built into it. But Machine Learning skills are extremely hard to find.

Many companies are trying to fill the need using a regular data scientist (also hard to find). This session will discuss the necessary skill sets of a Machine Learning data scientist, the parallel data scientist skills which can be cross trained, and how to manage those people once they get the right training. It will also cover the value proposition of ML and how it applies to your business.

Embracing Service Leadership to Transform Technology Delivery
In a competitive technology landscape, it can be tempting to lead through a traditional authoritarian approach. But maybe there is another way to lead your firm, motivate your staff and transform the way you deliver technology. Service leadership is a mentality that always puts the needs of other first. By creating a culture where all employees focus on how best they can serve their clients, co-workers and community, a natural competitive advantage can result. If top leadership can clearly demonstrate that they are committed to putting others first, that culture will take hold across the organization and better results will follow.

This session is geared toward technology leadership at all levels of the organization, including emerging and aspiring leaders. The session will provide background and research on service leadership. It will provide case examples of how service leadership can make a positive impact and will include recommendations for starting down the path toward service leadership in your organization. The presentation is interactive and will engage audience members in dialogue.

How to Hack Humans and Unfluence People
Most security breaches are due to the failure of the human element: the intruders hack the humans to hack the systems. You can hack more systems in two months by becoming interested in other people than you can in two years by trying to get in through technology. This session talks about how malicious hackers influence - or in this case “unfluence” - their victims using manipulation and coercion and exploiting the bugs in the human hardware. Security professionals need to understand how they can be vulnerable to the factors of unfluence, so they can detect, deter, and deliver countermeasures. Additionally, attendees will learn the importance of human factors, psychology, and leadership for security professionals. The speaker will cover social engineering through examples, demonstrations, and case studies to make sure you and your employees aren’t under the unfluence.

Podcast Marketing - Talking Cost Effectively To Your Best Customers Like a Rock Star!
Over the last 3 years, Gallup has created 5 new podcasts channels as a way of both marketing to and communicating with our customers via a podcast. We have seen incredible success using both audio downloads and live streaming audio, as well as video via YouTube to reach thousands of new and existing customers. Most of our podcasts are done weekly and for a regional audience in the US, India, Singapore and Australia and are done at a very low cost. As of October 2016, Gallup is seeing over 20,000 monthly downloads to the audio only channels and views that exceed 35,000 on YouTube. Its a marketing channel that should not be ignored.

Doing a podcast in the enterprise has a different set of issues and challenges (Both technical and non-technical) that need to be navigated carefully. This session will include lessons on:

1. The pitch to the leadership team really matters
2. You often already have a built-in audience and they live on Facebook and why it matters
3. What it looks like when your customers engage
4. What kind of investment in equipment and resources does it take to get started
5. Why having a Social Media Manager matters
6. What will the future look like with podcasting

To Cloud or Not to Cloud: What Are the Right Questions?
Everyone is talking about Cloud Computing, but there seems to be wildly differing perspectives on what it means, how it works, and the costs and benefits of such a model. When it comes to databases and other business critical applications in the cloud, the message is even more confusing. In this session, we will discuss what House of Brick is seeing and hearing from large enterprises to small businesses. The session will present the “right questions” to ask about Tier 1 applications and the cloud – from private to public and other key SaaS/DBaaS considerations.

8 Steps to an Intuitive UI
Having an intuitive UI is a top goal for every project, yet surprisingly few people have a strong understanding of what this concept really means. (A quick test: ask someone to define it. Most likely you won’t be unimpressed by their answers.)

By attending this session, you will learn what it means for a UI to be intuitive. You will learn a practical definition, the attributes required to be intuitive, and the levels of intuitiveness. Ultimately, you will learn how to help your team design UIs that are more self-explanatory and require less training and documentation—which is especially important for mobile apps.

You will see these concepts applied to a variety of real design problems. Finally, you will learn that not all UIs need to be intuitive, and when it is a good idea to have unintuitive UI—strategically rather than accidentally.
